LETTER OF INVITATION
To: School Principals, Teachers, Youth Program Leaders, and Community Members
HOʻŌLA ʻĀINA Youth Food Sovereignty Congress is a 5-day youth leadership development held on the island of Oʻahu- a conference for approximately 60 high school or college students and 30 teachers/mentors interested in cultural resilience, environmental sustainability, natural resource conservation, sustainable agriculture, community leadership, and social-economic justice. Our goal is to invite a broad representation of youth from throughout the paeʻāina, the Hawaiian archipelago, and the moku honu (the continental U.S.), and Pacific neighbors.
Youth Food Sovereignty Congress delegates will be competitively selected via the attached application and will be admitted as a delegation representing their school or community food and agriculture system- we will be accepting two (2) ʻōpio or youth delegates and one (1) Makua delegate who will serve as the delegations travel chaperone and team alakaʻi (leader) during all of the events.
Travel to and from the event, conference accommodations, and meals for the delegation is included in the program registration fee of $300 per delegate or $900 per delegation.
Scholarships are going to be made available- more information will follow. Please inform your most engaged and mature students, especially those demonstrating aptitudes in agriculture and food systems, traditional ecological knowledge, community health & well-being, and community leadership & youth empowerment, with the ultimate goal being groups of two ʻōpio leaders to represent their school or food community accompanied by a makua or adult mentor.
